These images document two site-specific performances commissioned for the exhibition “The Naked Museum” at Sheldon Museum of Art in Lincoln Nebraska in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the iconic Phillip Johnson building. The pieces were satirical docent-guided performances. One of the characters is a Chasidic Jew named Bitzalel Friedemannan, while the other is an opinionated curator named Betsey Geffen. To be clear, I am both of the characters. Mr. Friedemann’s piece was conceived to blur the line between real and fake and place into question notions of authenticity and identity. Ms. Geffen’s piece focused on the art market; people’s frustration with understanding the value contemporary art; and how art can still be a transcendent (ie-spiritual) experience.
